The Best Frugal Tips
What is a Frugal Lifestyle?
A frugal lifestyle in a nutshell is basically living without any unnecessary expenses. For instance, food, water, shelter, means of transportation if you have a job that you need to get to are all forms of necessary expenses.
Now, certain necessary things differ for people, for example, if you work at home, maybe having the internet as well is a necessary expense.
Things that arent absolutely necessary are Netflix subscriptions, maybe some makeup subscriptions you have. Just anything that is not needed for you to survive basically is an unnecessary expense.
What are the Benefits of a Frugal Lifestyle?
Essentially the benefit of living a frugal lifestyle is that way you can cut back on unnecessary living expenses to have the extra money in your life for other things.
Things you can do with extra money every month
- Paying off Debt
- Taking vacations
- Saving up for a home
- Saving for your kids’ college tuition
- Starting your own business
- Ability to take time off from your occupation for emergencies, etc.
Truly the possibilities are endless when you have a few extra bucks to spare after bills each paycheck. Below I have listed some of the best frugal living tips and tricks you can try.
Do I recommend doing all of the ones listed? I mean sure if you want to but me personally I only do a few and I have seen a vast improvement in my expenses. I definitely can stretch a dollar for a longer period of time if you know what I mean.

1. Cancelling Subscriptions
This was a tough one for me. I’m almost embarrassed to even tell you. I got a little ridiculous during quarantine, somehow someway I got swooped into all these subscriptions between Netflix, the Hulu bundle that includes Disney, National Geographic, & ESPN, Gaia (yes I went there) HBO, Peacock as well as a VPN to get the exclusive Netflix shows & movies that are shown in Canada, Australia, etc.
Boy oh boy, after I sat down one day to analyze my finances I said to myself “hold on, enough is enough”. Clearly somewhere in all of this quarantine-ing things got out of hand. Definitely needed to cut some of these back because I don’t even watch this much TV, to begin with.
I was seriously paying for all these subscriptions spending easily over $40 bucks a month. When I realized it was time to have a serious conversation with myself, I asked myself ” Jenn, I love you and all but these subscriptions, girl. Are you going to lose sleep if we cancel 1 or 2?” Nope. (Let’s be honest, about 3 or 4 should’ve gone at that time but I digress..)
The main point of this story is that that is very roofless. But it is the honest question you have to ask yourself when canceling these subscriptions, or for anything really that is the key to living a frugal lifestyle.
After my subscription canceling tangent, I only kept the VPN (get 3 months free with this code) and Netflix since with that I can protect my data online as well as watch exclusive shows and movies from other countries on Netflix.
2. Sell Things You Do NOT Need
This one in my opinion is great, there are so many benefits to this one. Sell the unnecessary “junk” that you have lying around.
Your junk is someone else’s treasure (ahh this golden nugget that can be applied to anything in your life, even relationships).
You get rid of things in your home and make a few extra bucks everybody wins. You can sell these items on many different apps like eBay, Mercari, Offer Up, or maybe even Amazon.
Plus, the wonderous benefits there are of truly not having clutter around the house. It does wonders for the mindset. Personally, I get antsy and a little stressed when my home is a mess but that just might be me and my quirks.
3. Coupons, coupons, and more Coupons
I love coupons, they are great. Wouldn’t call myself the coupon queen but it is not beneath me to use coupons whenever I can. I adore saving money it’s kind of my jam.
Getting a good deal on something. I’m that mom who takes a wild but educated guess on what size my son is going to be during the Winter to shop for his Winter clothes during summer because it saves me money and things go on clearance.
I use apps like Honey when shopping online. I love Honey because I don’t have to manually enter all the coupon codes myself.
It automatically enters all the coupon codes for me during check out and applies the coupon that saves me the most money.
If you haven’t downloaded Honey, you are truly missing out. From one friend to another, download Honey you’ll thank me later.
Another app I love using is Rakuten. Easily it is such an amazing app. Again, were friends here in this blog, friends tell friends stuff.
When I win, I want you to win as well. Rakuten is great because it gives you great coupon codes like Honey but they also give you cashback.
At the end of 3 months, they send you either a check or a deposit through Paypal.
It is really nice because if you are a big online shopper like I am, you will get a percentage of the total of that purchase deposited back into your account every 3 months.
If you haven’t downloaded Rakuten, do it. Again thank me later.

4. Budgeting
I have a post all on the best money management apps out there right now. But, what is in that post also applies here. Learn to save, learn to manage your money.
I feel like someone out there can relate to this next statement but I feel as though we weren’t taught how to properly manage large portions of money. Not, in school, not at home.
So with that being said, it’s vital that we teach ourselves to manage our money because if we don’t I guarantee you it will disappear before your very eyes.
Sit down have annoying but ESSENTIAL conversations with yourself about where your money goes.
5. Find Free Entertainment
Find something to do that does not require money. Even if it’s not completely “free” try to work out a budget when going out that way you’re spending within your means.
Coming up with a plan for how much you’re willing to spend when going out is key.
Sometimes you go out with friends and have a mindset to spend only $20 bucks but if you’re not stern with yourself.
It can sometimes lead to you spending more than what you had originally anticipated. Keep yourself in check, living a frugal lifestyle is all about learning how to stay disciplined.
You don’t always need to spend money to have fun. Let me say it louder for the people in the back. YOU DO NOT ALWAYS NEED TO SPEND MONEY TO HAVE FUN! There are plenty of free things you can do like..
- Go to a Park
- Check out a Beach
- Go to a Pool
- Get some of those old board games to host a game night with some friends, tell them to each bring a dish
- Go camping
- Go to the library, get involved in some of their community events.
Honestly, in my opinion, if you are around the right kinds of people. You can be in your car doing nothing and still have fun in the midst of doing nothing.
6. Cook in Bulk & Buy in Bulk
This tip is another rough one for me. I don’t like the idea of meal prepping and cooking in bulk. But, I do it. Why? Because it saves me money, simple.
Spending money at the grocery every single day for different meals sounds so lovely (because I’m a foodie and I LOVE to eat) but in reality, it isn’t money-saving-friendly, it’s more like money-spending-friendly (Hah, see what I did there?).
There are tons of videos on how to meal prep on Youtube and ways you can do it on a budget. I suggest watching some learning how to stretch your dollar when going to a grocery store.
Buy in bulk, my friends. See but buy things that you know you’ll actually use. Otherwise, it’ll be pointless for you to go buy a caseload of mayo when you are a household of one per instance and you eat mayo once a month. (Doesn’t apply to everyone but you catch my drift.)

7. Reduce your Shopping
Yes you, I’m talking to you. Start buying things you actually need and reduce your shipping habits. (not judging though, I’ve been there)
Online shopping sounds nice and all but try to discipline yourself to shop only once every month or once every 3 months.
Come up with something that works for you and the budget you have in mind and STICK WITH IT.
I know it’s easier said than done but believe me when I tell you if you’re serious about being frugal it can be done. Remember mindset is everything.
If you are going to shop and if you’re going to do it online do it in a smart way. Make sure you use the coupons and cashback programs mentioned above.
Bonus Tip:
If you are going to shop online or even in-store and let’s say you have to get an oil change for example. You know you have to go to Jiffy Lube for an oil change ahead of time.
So, what you can do is you can buy gift cards from other people that are about to expire from Raise.com.
These gift cards that are about to expire are best used when you plan ahead. (Which is why I used the oil change for my example.)
For my son’s summer clothes I purchased an Old Navy gift card and it worked like a charm.
I ended up saving about $30 dollars by buying a $50 dollar gift card. It’s super simple to use you look for the gift cards you want to buy from the company that you want to shop at.
In minutes they send you the gift card code to your email, or to your raise account.
*Sometimes people have to send it to you physically but every purchase differs I would check out the instructions before you buy it.
Just a few months ago I didn’t even know this was even a thing. I had no idea people were selling their soon-to-be expired gift cards.
I use it, it works really well check them out. They have gift cards for tons of places like Walmart, Old Navy, Bath & Body Works, etc.
Example how Raise Works:
Services at Jiffy Lube are going to cost you $80
The gift card on Raise is a $100 dollar gift card
It costs you $60 dollars to buy this $100 gift card that’s about to expire.
You end up saving money and having some money left over on the gift card for something else at Jiffy Lube.

I never heard about raise.com, I will definitely be checking them out. I am the queen of frugal lol. It is now a habit for me. Great post.
Raise is awesome! I can always count on them to save a few bucks every time I shop and they have available gift cards. (It may not be a lot that you save for 1 gift card) but when you shop a ton or have kids every dollar that you can save is important. Thank you so much for your comment, I am glad you enjoyed this post on frugal tips.
