1. Start by decluttering your home.
Get rid of anything you don’t need or use anymore. That includes old clothing, books you no longer need, anything in your home that is just taking up unnecessary space. There truly is nothing like starting off the season with a clean tidy home.
You can donate the items you no longer need or sell them on Marketplace. (If you needed a sign to get rid of that something you have been procrastinating on getting rid of, this is it.)
If you don’t feel like completely getting rid of something that isn’t being used anymore, a great way to bring that item to life is by repurposing. Reusing or repurposing something that you haven’t used in a long time is a great way to find a use for certain things that are just taking up space in a basement or attic.
I found this great article on DIY projects you can do at home to repurpose old items you can look into. Check out how to repurpose items here.
2. Tackle one room at a time.
This will make the task seem less daunting and you’ll be able to see progress as you go. Sometimes it can be overwhelming to complete a task, especially for the people that do not like to clean. However, a great way to keep the energy high when doing something you don’t like to do is to do the Pomodoro Technique.
If you arent aware of what the Pomodoro Technique actually is, feel free to check out themuse.com it explains all about it.
In a nutshell, the Pomodoro Technique is about being productive for 25 minutes on and you work WITHOUT ANY DISTRACTIONS. That means no phones, computers, unnecessary conversations, etc.
Then after those 25 minutes are done take a 5-minute break. Then after you repeat this process 4 times you then take a 15-20 minute break to use your phone or do whatever until the task is done, or until you are satisfied.
3. Make a list of the tasks you need to do and get to it!
If you can’t get to the entire list because you have other things to do, you’re fine. Just remember to prioritize the things that do need to get done.
4. When you clean, wipe from top to bottom.
That way you can try to avoid dirtying clean areas as you go.
